For anyone planning to take the board exam, let me tell you one thing YOU HAVE TO REALLY WANT IT.
I honestly had no intention to take the board exam since i was already deadset on going to Medical School the following semester. As a matter of fact I had already paid my application fee and completed my requirements for enrolment. The only problem was the thought in my head that kept on coming back. I needed to finish what I started. I loved psychology and although I had already graduated, It wasn’t good enough for me. I needed to take my Board Exam. So there I was the next day enrolling into the last batch offered by the review center, paying in full.
BLEPP CRITERIA (Psychometrician)
Theories of Personality = 20% (100 items)
Psychological Assessment = 40% (150 items)
Abnormal Psychology = 20% (100 items)
Industrial Psychology = 20% (100 items)
Total =100% (450 items)
Here are some of My Top Tips
✸Enroll in a review center. So this is kind of controversial because some may not be able to afford it but if you’re the type of person who needs the little extra push then I highly recommend it. Do you 100% need it? NO. If I enroll in a review center, will I surely pass? Definitely not. Review centers will give you all the materials you need to pass the Board Exam (Practice Exams, Book References, National Lecturers) but they will not learn it for you. I REPEAT. THEY WILL NOT LEARN IT FOR YOU.
✸STUDY. When I say study, I'm not saying it lightly. I really mean study. Make a plan and treat it as if you were still in school and going to your classes. If you think about it, it’s just like school but harder. You’re teaching yourself, basically learning everything again and not to mention you only have about 4 months to learn it all. It’s 10x harder than a semester in school which means you should be putting in that much more effort.
✸Know your study style. I suggest you figure it out sooner rather than later. We all have different ways of studying and what works well for others may not work as well for you so stick to what you know and be consistent. As for the way I study, I prefer coffee shops. Did I spend way to much money coffee? It was ridiculous but it got me results. I think the main reason as to why it worked so well for me was me telling myself that if I was giving effort by actively going to place and spending money specifically for the purpose of studying then I would actually study and for some reason it worked. If you're someone who can study at home or in silence then props to you!
✸Have Faith. Having faith in God helped me so much. I prayed and prayed and prayed and prayed some more. It played a big part in my Board Exam Journey because it lessened my anxiety and gave me the courage to push through the obstacles I had to overcome. Something to remember though is that God Helps Those Who Help Themselves. He will help you, but he won't answer the exam for you. You need need to put in the effort.
✸Believe in yourself.
How I Studied
⍟A comfy spot with good lighting. You're gonna be studying for hours so make sure you make yourself comfortable.
⍟Highlighters. They might not work for everyone but they definitely worked for me. Try sticking with 2 to 3 colors max. Any more than that, you'll find yourself spending way too much time switching them out.
⍟One Big Notebook. I had one large ring bind notebook and divided it into 5 equal parts. (1 part for each of the 4 subjects and an extra part for extra notes) It was just easier to have all my notes in one notebook than to have them scattered everywhere and if I had any loose notes I inserted it in the notebook.
⍟A Study Schedule. I studied most days from 9-4 (or even later) with multiple study breaks in between. I didn't study everyday though because I'm human and sometimes you just need to go out and live your life. 😌
⍟ Studying according to the lecture schedule. This is if you are enrolled in a review center. If your next lecture is Psychological Assessment then study Assessment, if it's Theories of Personality then study Personality. You get the point. If you study the topic before your lecture then you'll be more likely to understand the topic being discussed than if you were to attend the lecture clueless.
⍟I studied Theories of Personality, Psychological Assessment, Abnormal Psychology and Industrial Psychology. IN. THAT. ORDER. During the exam all the subjects overlap each other, meaning some topics covered in Assessment come out in the Abnormal exam and vis versa. When I was studying I found it beneficial to understand the subjects in that order, but then again that's just my opinion.
⍟READ. This wasn't optional. Reading books was the most important part for me. If I didn't read it then I just couldn't understand it. I'm not saying you have to read all the books because that's next to impossible and you're gonna get confused. I read one book for each subject and used an extra book as backup just incase. I had PDFs for all my books, printed them out, book binded my main books and read my back-up books on my ipad. I had book summaries that I found online for easy reference and gave myself an even higher eye grade. Woohoo 😐
BOOKS TO READ
؞Theories of Personality By Feist & Feist (7th, Seventh Edition)
؞Industrial Organizational Psychology By Aamodt (6th, Sixth Edition)
؞Abnormal Psychology - An Integrative Approach By Barlow and Durand (7th Edition)
؞Psychological Testing and Assessment: An Introduction to Tests and Measurement By Cohen (7th Edition)
The Day Before The Board Exam
Stop Studying. Relax and Treat yourself to a massage or whatever you can think of to help you relax. At that point your anxiety is piling up high and if you continue to pressure yourself, you will crash (I almost did). You've been doing the best that you can and you owe it to yourself to finish strong!
The Exams
Theories of Personality: To be honest the exam went better than I expected, it was for sure the easiest out of the four subjects. If you've read your books, understood the different theories and can differentiate between them the you are good to go! The questions ranged from easy items like terminology to difficult items like differentiating different concepts.
Psychological Assessment: This was when I really started to doubt myself. Out of all the subjects, Assessment was the one I was most confident about. I WAS SO WRONG. I don't know how to explain it. The questions were easy, but the answers were hard. (The options were almost synonymous). It felt like I was playing 20 questions with a time limit. This was where I think all my prayers came in.
Abnormal Psychology: Just like TOP, it was okay. If you've read your books and understood them then you're good. I was kind of disappointed on how little history and foreign concepts came out but then again i'm not complaining. The questions covered the different types of disorders, etiology and treatments.
Industrial Psychology: It's more on memorization for this one. I remember getting overwhelmed by studying the book so for this subject I mainly just focused on the review booklets and drills.
*The exam changes each year. So take this with a grain of salt. Good Luck!

My Result
Based on criterion my score was just above passing (2 points to be exact) but the fact that the national passing rate was only 47% and the passers that ranked TOP 10 got a score of 80, I'd say I did pretty well.
